How many moving boxes do I need?
The right number depends on your square footage, storage habits and how much you plan to pack in specialty containers. Home size is still the easiest place to begin.
A practical starting point by home size
These are planning ranges, not universal rules. A minimalist two-bedroom apartment may need fewer crates than a storage-heavy one-bedroom.
What increases the count?
- A full kitchen, pantry or home office
- Books, collections and hobby supplies
- Linen closets, seasonal décor and garage storage
- Children’s rooms with toys, games and keepsakes
Clothing kept on hangers, furniture, televisions, artwork and oversized items generally need separate moving supplies and should not be counted like ordinary boxes.
Why reusable crates are easier to estimate
Cardboard boxes come in mixed sizes, so “35 boxes” can mean very different capacities. Uniform crates give you a more predictable planning unit, create steadier stacks and nest when they are empty.
